Topographic Labiaplasty

Abstract

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the labia minora hypertrophy. The increase of this kind of surgery in the last years has been very important all over the world because the high interest and requirement of women about it. Up to 11 different techniques have been reported in the literature, and all of them with excellent results, very low rates of complications, and high satisfaction rates in patient’s quality of life. There is any technique better than others (no gold estándar technique), and it is mandatory to perform the best surgery for each clinical case. The ambulatory way of operating, the fast recovery post-surgery, and returning to usual life are, among others, the keys to success of the surgery. Scientific societies recommend about the importance to be extremely strict with indications and inclusión criteria in this surgery, especially in young women cases. Training and qualification of surgeons in this matter are inexcusable. Although there are many articles published, we must consider further research well-designed about the techniques which is required to assess the value of this treatment and the appropriate indications for it, and, furthermore, systematic assessment of the surgical and patient-reported outcomes of labiaplasty is needed to assess whether it is effective and safe.
