Abstract

Labia minora hypertrophy has faced different type of classifications; currently there is no clear agreement among pediatricians, plastic surgeons, and gynecologists regarding the type of labia minora hypertrophy; there are several proposals for classification inside the literature. The common denominator is the length of the labia in centimeters; more recently different authors are considering labia minora hypertrophy to involve different structures, such as anatomical variants and excess of skin at the level of anterior and posterior commissures. Moreover others consider degrees of severity and asymmetry to be important when describing this condition.

A standardized and reproducible system for labia minora hypertrophy is crucial to understand the huge anatomical variability of the vulva; it allows the surgeon to perform a good surgical planning according to the patient’s needs.
