First Record of Cotton Mouth Jack, Uraspis secunda (Carangidae) from Southwestern Gulf of Mexico and Clarification of the Presence of Uraspis helvola in the Mexican Pacific

Journal of Ichthyology Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Abstract

The presence of Uraspis secunda is reported for the first time on the Mexican coast of the Gulf of Mexico, based on two adult specimens of 307 and 357 mm in total length captured south of Veracruz, expanding its area of distribution in the southwest of the Gulf of Mexico. In addition, a new record of Uraspis helvola (327 mm in total length) is presented in the central Pacific Mexico. Meristic and morphometric data of both specimens are provided, and their taxonomic issues are discussed, showing some characteristics that allow differentiating between species.
