The ribbed cherry ( Eugenia uniflora L. ), also called the cayenne cherry or pitanga, is native to South America. It was introduced to Réunion in the middle of the 19th century. Its leaf is used as a substitute for tea in many countries and traditional herbal medicine from Réunion sometimes uses it in synergy with lemongrass and cinnamon leaf to treat flu, headaches and aches.

Properties :

Diuretic :

Rib cherry infusion is traditionally used to decongest the urinary tract.

Febrifuge :
In Reunion Island, an infusion of ribbed cherry leaves is used to reduce fever and treat flu-like conditions.

Anti-inflammatory :
The herbal tea is used to combat the effects of colds and headaches.

Body aches :
Reunionese custom recognizes the anti-stiffness function of the infusion of ribbed cherry leaves.

Examples of use:

Tisane :
Bring the water to a boil then infuse 1 tablespoon of crushed dry leaves per cup for 10 minutes off the heat. Consume 2 to 3 cups per day.

Decoction :
Boil a mixture of ribbed cherry leaves, lemongrass and cinnamon leaves for 10 minutes (1 tablespoon per cup).

Limit consumption to 3 cups of herbal tea per day.
