    Description
    Head with narrow dark-edged blue bands; male usually with a broad band across anterior interorbital space. Scales on body with dark-edged light blue spots (female) or vertical lines (male). Color of female form brown, reddish brown ventrally; male form olive. Blue-edged bar on pectoral base dusky orange-red in female, orangish to dusky in male. Dorsal spines flexible. Caudal fin truncate to slightly rounded.

    Indo-Pacific: Red Sea and South Africa to Easter Island, north to Japan , south to Australia. Not found in the Hawaiian Islands, but replaced by the closely related Anampses cuvier. Southeast Atlantic: southeast coast of South Africa .
