    Description
    Body oblong and compressed; snout widely rounded; lower branch of first gill arch with 13 to 18 gill rakers; ventral area of chest up to origin of pelvic fins scaleless; lateral line arched anteriorly, with 23 to 40 strong scutes in the straight area; tongue, palate, and floor of mouth white or cream colored; rest of mouth blue black; body charcoal or black dorsal, lighter ventrally, with about 6 narrow, dark, vertical bars separated by lighter spaces .
