Ophiopogon

Ophiopogon is a genus of evergreen perennial plants in the family Asparagaceae. It is commonly known as mondo grass or lilyturf. Ophiopogon plants are native to East Asia, but they have been introduced and cultivated all over the world.

Ophiopogon plants are known for their low-growing, grass-like foliage and their small, white or lilac flowers. They are a popular choice for groundcovers, borders, and rock gardens. Ophiopogon plants are also relatively low-maintenance and drought-tolerant, making them a good choice for busy gardeners.

There are many different species of Ophiopogon, but some of the most popular include:

  • Ophiopogon japonicus (mondo grass): This is the most common species of Ophiopogon. It is a low-growing, evergreen plant with narrow, grass-like leaves. The flowers are small and white or lilac in color.
  • Ophiopogon planiscapus: This species is also known as black mondo grass. It has dark green or almost black leaves and small, purple flowers.
  • Ophiopogon caespitosus (lilyturf): This species is a taller and more upright variety of Ophiopogon. It has wide, grass-like leaves and small, white flowers.

Ophiopogon plants are relatively easy to grow. They prefer well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. However, they can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions and some drought. Ophiopogon plants are also relatively pest- and disease-resistant.

To care for Ophiopogon plants, simply water them regularly, especially during the first year after planting. Fertilize the plants in the spring with a balanced fertilizer. Prune the plants in the late winter or early spring to remove dead, diseased, or damaged leaves.

Ophiopogon plants are a beautiful and low-maintenance addition to any landscape. Enjoy their year-round foliage and delicate flowers for many years to come!

Note: The plant is shipped in its pot, firmly secured with several layers of clear tape, thereby avoiding any shuffling and moving during transit. The plant reaches you with minimal damage- very safe and secure. We have been shipping plants like this for several years (plant are sometimes shipped in smaller pots for safety and ease of shipping). Most plants go dormant in fall and winter and will lose most of their leaves - looking dead and dry - very normal. They will flush out in spring.

We cannot send ship some plants and some sizes to California due to restrictions placed by department of agriculture.

Note
Please note that the plant will be shipped in its pot, securely fastened with multiple layers of clear tape to prevent any shifting or damage during transit. This ensures that the plant arrives to you with minimal damage, safely and securely. We have been employing this method for shipping plants for several years, occasionally using smaller pots for added safety and convenience during transit. It's important to understand that many plants enter a dormant state during the fall and winter months, resulting in the loss of most leaves and appearing dry or lifeless. This is a natural process, and come springtime, they will begin to regrow and thrive once again. Please be aware that due to regulations set by the Department of Agriculture, there are certain plants and sizes that we are unable to ship to California. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
