Zingiber zerumbet is often called ‘Shampoo Ginger’ due to its thick clear fluid that is produced from its flowering cone. It is known locally in Hawaii as ‘Awapuhi’ and used as a substitute for shampoo. Also this use may be somewhat exaggerated it had been commercialized in a few very popular shampoo brands. Besides being a back up plan for shampoo shortage it has great uses in the landscape. The foliage along on this species is beautiful with long wide leaves on an arching stem. The arching looks make just a few plants look like a lush tropical planting. In summer a green cone emerges on a separate stem and begins producing small creamy white flowers. Towards the end of blooming the cone begins to turn red and eventually it becomes the focal point of the garden. These red cones also lead it to its other name ‘Pinecone’ ginger. They make excellent cut flowers as they have a long lasting vase life. If left alone they will add color for the rest of the season. We also offer a variegated leaf variety known as ‘Darcyi’
