Aleurites moluccana, commonly known as the candlenut tree or kukui nut tree, is a species of flowering tree in the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. Native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, particularly Hawaii, it is widely cultivated for its seeds, which are used for various purposes.

The candlenut tree is a medium-sized evergreen tree that can reach heights of up to 20 meters (66 feet). It has large, glossy green leaves that are typically heart-shaped or ovate. The flowers are small and white, arranged in clusters at the ends of the branches. The tree produces round, hard-shelled nuts, known as candlenuts or kukui nuts, which contain a high oil content.

Candlenuts have a long history of use in traditional medicine, cuisine, and cultural practices in the regions where they grow. The nuts are rich in oil, which can be extracted and used for cooking, as a fuel for lamps (hence the name "candlenut"), and in cosmetic products. In traditional Hawaiian culture, the nuts were also used to make leis and were considered symbols of protection and enlightenment.

Additionally, the candlenut tree is valued for its ornamental qualities and shade-providing capabilities, making it a popular choice for landscaping in tropical and subtropical regions. However, it's worth noting that the raw nuts contain toxins and should be properly processed before use.
