The Sapodilla is an evergreen tree that is native to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. It has glossy, dark green leaves. Grows I rainforests and coastal forests. It has a milky sap that is the source of chewing gum. The fruits are edible. They are very sweet and have a flavor that is similar to brown sugar. Hardy in zones 10-12.

 

Growing Instructions for the Sapodilla

 

  1. Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours. 2. The seeds like moist, well-drained soil. Make a mixture of half potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite. 2. Put the soil in a pot. 3. Sow the seeds on the soil. 4. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. 5. Water the seeds. Keep the soil moist but not wet. 6. Place the pots in an area with warm temperatures in full sun or part shade. The seeds take about 30 days to germinate. 7. When the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
