Characteristic Dorsal rays XII, 10-12; Anal rays II, 10-12; pectoral rays 16-18; lateral-line scales 16-18; body depth 2.3-2.7 in standard length. Posterior margin of preopercle smooth. 2 spinous procurrent rays on both upper and lower orgins of caudal fin. Color alternating blue and yellow stripes. Caudal fin with a broad yellow upper lobe margin and a broad black lower lobe margin; margin of spinous portion of the dorsal fin also yellow; the anal fin largely black.
habitats Occurs in small to large aggregations in exposed outer reef slopes and rocky inshore reefs. Its diet consists of zooplankton, especially copepods. 
Distribution Distributed in the western Pacific from Taiwan to the Hawaiian and Pitcairn Islands, north to the Izu Islands, south to Rowley Shoals and Lord Howe and Rapa Islands; throughout Micronesia. It is found in southern Taiwanese waters; Lyudao and Lanyu, southe
