Labia minora or the “inner lips” of the vulva can have numerous variations in their shape and size. While asymmetries of this area are usually the norm, the most common problem with which women present to us is “large sized” labia minora. Younger sexually inactive women complain that the labia often shows through their bikini and tights, causes abrasions due to friction against undergarments on walking, especially from sanitary pads during menstruation. In sexually active women, it may lead to difficulty in intercourse. Hence, labia minora reduction surgery is often sought both by sexually active and inactive women. It is one of the commoner female genital cosmetic surgeries and is often done on day care basis. Recovery is complete within 3-4 weeks with almost inconspicuous scars. Women can be back to regular activities after this period.
In some societies this surgery is still looked down upon as women’s needs are still not a priority and education and awareness levels are low. However, in my practice I’m seeing that slowly but steadily women are more open to this surgery and the number of cases that I do annually now is almost double of what I used to do 5 years back. If someone has this condition one must let go of the taboo and shame around female genital cosmetic surgeries and to seek treatment from a plastic surgeon!
