Summary[edit]

Description I photographed this ichneumon in my garden (Ipswich, VC25 East Suffolk, TM166450) on 15 July 2015. Ichneumon expert Gavin Broad has confirmed that it is a female Diplazon laetatorius. Gavin went on to explain that this species is a "ubiquitous parasitoid of hoverflies, ovipositing in eggs or first instar larvae of e.g. Episyrphus balteatus. Emergence is from the puparium. Males are only known rarely from India and North America. It's been transported all over the world and being parthenogenetic can be established from a single female. The hind leg colour scheme is unique in diplazontines. Also white stripes and red on the metasoma are useful characters". There are no records for this species in Suffolk currently on the NBN Gateway.
