Description

About 1.5 inches long. (Asiomorpha coarctata. A millipede from the family Paradoxosomatidae, order Polydesmida.
This millipede is a “flat-backed millipede, family Paradoxosomatidae. There are currently 4 species, all non-native, established in Hawaii. Two can be ruled out by color, leaving 2 candidates. The dark black color and angled paranota (the “wings” on the sides of the body) indicate this species is probably Asiomorpha coarctata (Saussure, 1860). Flat-backed millipedes scavenge on plant material, usually in the leaf-litter, but some also feed on living plants or are arboreal. A. coarctata prefers wet forest leaf-litter habitats in Hawaii. The garden millipede, Oxidus gracilis (Koch, 1847) is similar, but is usually more brownish and has more rounded paranota. It is sometimes abundant and enters homes. It is also an occasional pest in gardens.
