Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is happy to announce a rusty jobfish exhibit for the first time in 11 years.
The rusty jobfish is a species of snapper (Lutjanidae family). In Okinawa, it is found at depths from 100 to 200 meters. In the local dialect it is called Taikuchamachi (a deep-sea large-mouth snapper). It is identified by its large jaw, and long slender tail fin.
“Journey in to the Deep Sea” exhibit at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
From Tuesday May 15th, 2018
※ Exhibit duration will depend on the condition of the fish.
The rusty jobfish is sensitive to water pressure and is difficult to display. However, after collecting the fish from 180m deep underwater, we put it into a pressure tank and gradually lowered the water pressure to let the fish adapt, which enabled us to successfully display the rusty jobfish for the first time in 11 years. This species is occasionally seen in the fish market, but it is very uncommon to see this fish alive. Please take this rare opportunity to observe this deep-sea fish.
