Distributed across the Indo-Pacific including southern Japan. It is a small grouper growing to 25 cm in length. Often seen in reef ponds on coral reefs. Distinguished by the dark brown spots that cover the body and fins. It is called Ishimibai in Okinawa, and is a popular fish caught by local fishermen.
