This pest-proof, summer bloomer, native to tropical Africa and Asia, has extremely reflexed petals that reveal prominent, long ‘eyelash’ pistils and stamens. Leaves cling to arbors, trellises or strong stemmed neighbors with the aid of curly tendrils at its leaf tips; each petal, folding back, creates the illusion of butterflies in the garden. Glorious in a container and in the garden; requires full sun and well-drained soil; 1 per sq. ft.; topsized; whz 8-10, but will overwinter in whz 7 in a protected location with extra mulch and well drained soil; blooms mid-late summer; grows up to 6′; heirloom 1902; variable.
