November 18, 2020 - Christmas Shearwater (Puffinus nativitatis)

Breeding on the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, Kiritimati (or Christmas Island), and other small islands in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, these shearwaters are found across the Pacific at other times of year. Feeding mostly on fish and squid, they capture small prey that has been driven to the surface by large predatory fish, such as tuna. They build their nests on the ground from small twigs or leaves under vegetation or in rock crevices. Females lay a single egg which both parents incubate. Both also feed the chick.
