This fish bit a live a'ama crab at 11:30pm. Their home range extends from Indian Ocean/Red Sea thru Northern Australia to Hawai'i. They are some what uncommon to be taken on hook and line but are more commonly taken spear fishing in Hawai'i. They really resemble a porgy but are quite tasty.

Leave the gun.  Take the cannolis.

There are two things I don't like about fishing.  Getting up early in the morning and boats.  The rest of it is fun.

Pretty fish... how does it taste?
Dom

Actually really good. The fish feed pretty heavily on shellfish and actually taste like lobster or close to it. I have noticed some varying taste but every once in a while you'll get one that's real lobster flavored. Heres a smaller one, all taken shorecasting.

Brother you are catching some pretty cool fish...I really like seeing the different fish from around the world...Bill
It may not be very productive,
but it's sure going to be interesting!

Awesome Mu catches! I've only caught one that was about 4.5lbs so far but it was super ono. Sashimi had a very clean flavor, not reefy at all. Fillets taste awesome cooked pretty much anyway u want.

Tasty looking specimen there.  I have never caught one of these guys.  Maybe one will bite a bottom rig fished from my boat.
Hope springs eternal
for the consumate fishermen.

Check out the teeth on that little guy.....and spiny back fin.

2 things to avoid for sure.

Sounds like it would make for a nice meal.  It does look like it could give you a good poke or chomp, as
Ted mentioned.
Thanks for showing us what's out there,
Dom

Add that one to the menu for the big AT banquet  ;)

Good catch Very tasty fish
The fish in my profile pic is a Mu I caught baitcasting a tako leg
I have heard that this is a rare catch on a rod and reel and most are caught while targeting other fish
I have been returning to the spot with a'ama crabs to try and target the Mu but I haven't been using them live I think I will try that next time

Thanks Fishamen7. I have seen them bite tako but they do seem to have a soft spot for crustaceans and I have noticed they tend to hang out in the same areas over time opposed to being wide ranging like some of our other gamefish. Good luck and tightlines.

Thanks for the photo, anyfish that tastes like lobster is a keeper, ;D and wow big eyes.  Are they mainly a deepwater fish?  I guess not though?
