The Beach
Morning Glory is a perennial, evergreen vine that grows on tropical beaches
around the world. It has light green leaves and beautiful, pink flowers with a
dark pink center. The flowers grow from the leaf axils and they are held
upright on the long, trailing stems of the vine. It blooms throughout the year.
It grows on sand dunes and helps to stabilize the sand and protect beaches from
erosion. The flowers are followed by brown seed pods that have four brown
seeds. The seeds float in sea water and are dispersed by ocean currents. It is
also known as the Goat’s Foot Morning Glory and the Railroad vine. The leaves
are edible and are used as a vegetable. It is used as a medicinal plant to
treat fish stings and other skin problems. The Beach Morning Glory is grown for
its ornamental flowers and foliage and for its ability to stabilize sand dunes.
It is used in parks, gardens, coastal areas and as a ground cover. Tolerant of
dry soils, wet soils, sandy and limestone soils, saline soils and drought. It
is an attractive plant with a fast growth rate and is easy to maintain in
tropical and subtropical landscapes. Hardy in zones 8b-12.

The seeds have
a hard seed coat that has to be treated, or scarified, in order for water to
enter the seeds so that they can sprout. 1. Scarify the seeds by nicking or
sanding the seed coat. The seeds can be sanded with sandpaper, a nail file or
an emery board. 2. Soak the seed in water for several hours. 3. The seeds like
moist, well-drained soil. Prepare a mixture of half potting soil and half sand,
perlite or vermiculite. 4. Put the mixture in a pot with drainage holes in the
base. 5. Water the mixture so that it is moist but not wet. 6. Put the seeds on
the soil. 7. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. 8. Water the seeds and
keep the soil moist but not wet. 9. Place the pots in an area with warm
temperatures in full sun or part shade. Kept at 70°F. Germination averages
14-21 days. Tolerates drought once established, faster growth, heavier bloom
with regular water. 10. When the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be
transplanted.
