The Sunburst and Baby's Breath thread got me all into exploring other morphs and colors that are out there, so this is a thread to show off those hidden gems and your favorite Favia corals...I'll start it off with a couple Tyree favorites that I would love to get my hands on

Tyree War and Peace...

The War and Peace favia is the same as the one Hugo introduced right?

If it is I remember when he got that piece and was trying to sell me a frag. :D I liked it, but I was way into micros back then. Now I'm kicking myselft, I should've gotten a frag.

Very nice btw. very nice.

All Delight,
That is correct Hugo found it according to reeffarmers website " Hugo acquired the coral from an Indonesian exporter in September of 2006"

shoot, your close to Hugo right? next time you go see him hit him up for some of his hidden gems, especially if that is you in your avatar? I'd be giving stuff to you for free :)

Here's a couple of old photos. The War coral is about 5 times the size and the Favia is about 3 times the size and the eyes have really turned a bright yellow.

Maybe we should start a club? Not actually a bad idea, since it might lead to frag swaps etc.

Sheol-Thank you very much, it is one of my favorite corals but it is kinda slow growing. I believe it is a christmas favia. It gets low light and still grows. I just noticed the sand on it in the pic, I should have blown it off before taking the pic, my damsel kicks up the sand.

Kev, PM sometime. When some of those grow, I need some frags. Is that your Baby's Breath? Are the coralittes that much bigger than a regular Favia?
Let's form the club, too. Us Favia lovers need to stick together in this world of Acropora fanatics! LOL.

I think it may be a Sunburst, I'm not 100% sure yet because I just got it in a trade with Alex, although it is very similar to the Baby's Breath. The polyps are the same in size in both just a slight variation in the color morph in difference. The polyps on the Baby's Breath get nice and puffy! :)

Well, that kind of ID is way over my head...

I dont really have any other photos of use.. the one I pasted was the best one.. That was a pic on the first day I got it (over 2 years ago). Here is a wider shot from that same day: http://www.d3f.org/misc/fish/90g/60-xmas-favia.jpg

Here is one showing it a couple months ago, however, and you can see how dense the mouths became since when I first got it.. http://www.d3f.org/misc/fish/90g/a13-right-side.jpg

Shortly afterw that last pic something afflicted my tank, and I lost 1/2 of my SPS, and my LPS began to receed.. not sure what it was, but I think I have slowed down some of it... needless to say, I lost about 1/2 of this favia.. very sad as it's my favorite.

Not to beat a dead horse, but, Dont go Kong! :D
I do believe it is a favia, possibly montastrea. Favia is almost a relative term, I would also venture to say for as many favia that have been posted there are equal posts which are not favia's at all, but on the outside are virtually identical.

An ez way to ID a cyphastrea is just by sheer size, I could be wrong but the mouths on your piece probably range from a dime to nickle sizes? Where on a cyphastrea you could probably fit 4-5 mouths within the circumference of a dime.

Needless to say, Im hooked! Gorgeous colonies and pieces everyone:D I'll be posting my 2 humble frags soon.

..... Just remember, Favia the corallites are always seperate & disticnt......

That is a general rule to follow, but not a definitive rule when deciding specie but rather a feature that can collaboratively help along with other physicalities. For example look at Favites bestae:
http://www2.aims.gov.au/coralsearch/html/701-800/Species%20pages/750.htm

Visually the tissue looks like it's seperated and indeed the skeleton has individual corallite walls.

Or the Favia rotundata
http://www2.aims.gov.au/coralsearch/html/101-200/Species%20pages/167.htm
or even a better example, Favia rotumana:
http://www2.aims.gov.au/coralsearch/html/101-200/Species%20pages/156.htm
where some morphs look like both favites and favia and even the skeleton is fairly inconspicuous. Hard stuff to figure out especially when you include variants that effect there physicality like light and moreso, flow.

Justin,

Yes, its not meant as a species identifier, but as a genral rule of thumb between the two Genera. I'm sure there are some exceptions to that in BOTH genera..
That being said, there have been 2 or 3 REALLY gorgeous Favites in the thread. That painfully bright one comes to mind..
Anyway, since they are so close no one has complained. This afterall, is a thread in tribute to both a beautiful coral Genus as well as its spectacular family.

nah... It's too irregular to be favites. It does have the shared corralite walls but thats about it. It's very similar to Platygyra pini.

I don't think the piebald Favia was a compound colony, rather just looks like there was gene drift in some of the dividing polyps. I don't know if different colonies would tolerate each other Al G Blenny ( neat handle BTW.)

It was the green one in the 3d pic. I have something a lot like it, but it looks even more like a Caulastrea. ( its white & tan though with the "peppermint" stripes. Its not an Acan. I'm begining to think it IS a Favia. But its definetly "in-between" in looks. Yours reminds me of it..

Matthew

It may just be the extent of the polyp extension that reminds me of this. The second pic looks SLIGHTLY like an Acanthastrea ( I know its not). Its certainly just as colorful!

Look at how the red and light green section seems to have polyps reaching over the darker green section. Then look at the brown section at the very bottom. It looks like it is trying to grow over the green section to the left. I still think they are different colonies that just happened to meet at "four corners". I don't know what a "gene drift" is. I don't know if that is possible in four different sections of the same colony. Corals grow together all the time. Just because they are killing each other off that easily doesn't mean they aren't fighting. If they can tolerate the others toxins they will just be fighting for surface space and light.

You could be right, Al. But also look how the color varies over the whole thing. I just think it doesn't know what it wants to look like!

Yeah but it only varies in two sections and those aren't even touching each other. The green and red one up top is the most variable and again it is overtaking the one below it. The brown one has a slight hint of two tones and that one is also overtaking the single colored one that is above and to the left of it. Even if it wasn't obvious that they are fighting for space it doesn't seem possible for one colonial coral to have two sections that are bi-color and marbled with different colors and then two other single color sections that are also different. Those are a lot of variables to make this a single colony. I think they would have to be living in some radioactive sludge to develop that much variability. Of course there is always room for me to be wrong but I really don't think I am this time.

melev. if anyone esle would have posted that i would call it an acan, from the first pic. very nice

Sheol, the red favia. heart and soul. came in a transhipment from flores. honestly the picture is horrible. i need to move it to get a betterpic. i treid to photoshop it and every time it came out worse so i left it without editing.
maybee i should put it this way. my gf of 4years broke hmm kicked me to the curb right before our aniversary. tore my heart and soul out left it to dry, and now i am left with this great coral to remember her by. thats is probably why it is hmm blackend=). maybe to much info but oh well.

I agree. I've seen the multi colony favias come in quite often in the past. One is usually trying to "one up" another and usually wins :)
