2. Bird Recovery in Kiritimati & Malden Islands in the Line Islands
Kiritimati (Christmas Island) of Kiribati is the largest atoll in the world and supports globally important seabird populations, including the Endangered White-throated Storm-petrel and Phoenix petrel, as well as the Christmas Island Reed-warbler. Ecological surveys and capacity building with the Wildlife Conservation Unit began at Kiritimati in 2007 and continues annually, funded and supported mainly by NZ agencies. Key objectives are to restore seabird populations on islets in Kiritimati Lagoon and the Central Lagoons via rat and cat removal, with much of the training work involving surveillance and monitoring. A feasibility study for restoring uninhabited Malden Island via cat removal was completed in 2015.
