Samoa has small numbers of freshwater organisms compared to marine species but is considered to have some undiscovered species, especially crustaceans.


Scientific: Macrobrachium lar
English: Monkey river prawn, Pacific river prawn, etc.

Notes:
In Samoa, we can find this shrimp in almost all rivers, especially in upper stream area. Adult individuals have the defference of body shape, the size of its clows, and body color. It makes you help to identify them male or female. And it's considered they spawn once a year in accordance with the rising river in rainy season.
This species is very good for food, and the maximum of their body size reaches 20cm.
By the way, this species are cultured in Vanuatu and Wallis-and-Futuna, the countries in the same South Pacific area, with using natural larvae.
