General Information

COMMON NAMES: Coastal Morning-glory; German Prunkwinden

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Pipi (RR MK), Pāpati (AT MT AK)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Madagascar - Asia - Malaysia - Pitcairn/Marquesas; Micronesia - Hawai‘i; n. to s.Japan

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Land, lowlands - mountains (+++)

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Medicine

KEY FEATURES: Prostrate, sometimes climbing, vine. STEM slender, round, without hairs. LEAVES alternate, heart-shaped, to 14x13cm, w/wo 3-7 lobes, dark green, surface matt without hairs, edge smooth, tip sharp; stalk to 15cm, round, pinkish. FLOWER axillary, usually 3; funnel-like, 4x5cm(LxØ), lavender with dark inside tube. FRUIT (=capsules) depressed-globose, 1-4 segments, each 5mmØ, with 5 bracts; ripen brown and papery. SEEDS brown-black, ~round, 4mmØ.
