General Information

COMMON NAMES: Three-saddle Cardinalfish, Bigeye Cardinalfish

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Indonesia - Samoa - Cooks; n. to s.Japan; s. to GBR

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore, reef-flat and outer reef slope; in branching corals

KEY FEATURES: To 8cmSL. Dark grey with some irridescent blue; tail base with wide irridescent blue saddle anteriorly, and wide black band posteriorly; Tail clear. Fins clear, except both Dorsals have dark anterior spines.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Grey Cardinalfish (Apogon fuscus, e.Africa - Tuamotu) and Guam Cardinalfish (Apogon guamensis, e.Africa - Samoa) both have dark saddle on taibase (vs. wide black band).

Rarotonga: video, Papua reef-flat, c.2003, Sven Afsenius with ID as Apogon bandenensis, 5/2005 G.McCormack ID confirms Apogon bandenensis as used by Lieske & Meyers (1996) because video specimen has wide black band on tailbase, bar below eye is not clear in video, see under "similar species".
