COMMON NAMES: Dark Cerulean

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE India - Indonesia - Cooks, n. to Japan (species)

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group (RR, AK, ?); Land, lowlands to uplands

KEY FEATURES: Small butterfly (7-9mm) males deep metallic purplish blue with black wing margins, females brown with a few blue scales.

More Information

IDENTIFICATION: Small, to 9mm BL. WINGS-UNDERSIDE brownish grey with rows of light grey broken lines crossing the wings and a chain of grey spots along margin last one on hind wings of males much darker almost black forming an eye spot. Females paler and less distinct. MALE topside deep metallic purplish-blue with black margin; FEMALE brown with a few blue scales. HEAD, THORAX, ABDOMEN, LEGS AND ANTENNAE black or greyish black.

GENERAL NOTE: ?possibly on leguminous flowers (including Vigna marina). Jamides bochus walkeri (Cook Islands only) is slightly paler but very similar to Jamides bochus argentina of Niue and Samoa.
